Specialist canyon teams have been deployed to assist in the search for a missing tramper in Kahurangi National Park.

Graham Garnett, 66, set out on a tramping expedition in the Baton/Ellis River area but did not return as scheduled on December 30.

Sergeant Jonny Evans of Police Search and Rescue has announced that a Defence Force NH90 helicopter will continue to be utilized in the search efforts. Additionally, four specialist canyon teams are being airlifted into Motueka to provide support.

The search operation will concentrate on spurs and major water systems originating from the Wharepapa/Arthur Range, according to Sgt Evans.

“Police express gratitude to all parties involved in the search for Graham so far.

“This includes the efforts of Land Search and Rescue, the Department of Conservation, the New Zealand Defence Force, the Rescue Coordination Centre, and commercial helicopter operators.”

Kahurangi National Park, the second largest national park in the country, spans the Nelson/Tasman and West Coast regions at the top of the South Island.

Authorities are urging anyone who was in the Baton/Ellis River area from the afternoon of Boxing Day, December 26, especially those near Flanagan’s Hut, to come forward with any information.

Any sightings or tips can be reported at 105.police.govt.nz by selecting “Update report,” or by calling 105 and referencing case number P064981672.
