When I first opened my store, I was filled with excitement and passion for all the brands I carried. From shoes to jewelry, lingerie, and clothes, I wanted to create a one-stop shop for my customers. Despite the cutthroat nature of the business and the cliques in Los Angeles retail, I persevered and opened my store in Sherman Oaks on May 5, 2003.

The store quickly became a neighborhood hotspot, with a cozy vibe that encouraged customers to hang out and chat. It was a dream come true, but things took an unexpected turn when Oprah’s team reached out to feature my store on her show, “Oprah’s Favorite Things.” This was a game-changer, as it required us to quickly set up a website to handle the influx of orders that would come flooding in after the episode aired.

With my husband Harry’s resourcefulness and determination, we managed to set up a website, find a fulfillment house, and prepare for the surge in demand. We even had to improvise on what to sell, opting for candles, sweatpants, T-shirts, and tank tops with the store’s name, Belle Gray, emblazoned on them. When the episode aired and Oprah enthusiastically handed out candles to her audience, the response was overwhelming. We made $125,000 in sales the day after the show aired, a staggering success that put Belle Gray on the map.

The experience taught me the power of perseverance, creativity, and seizing opportunities when they arise. It was a whirlwind journey from outsider to Oprah-endorsed success story, and I am grateful for every moment of it. Opening Belle Gray was a labor of love, and seeing it thrive and resonate with customers was a dream come true.
