Football Australia is set to launch an investigation into allegations that Brisbane Roar striker Justin Vidic was racially abused by Melbourne City youngster Medin Memeti during a recent A-League Men match at AAMI Park. Tempers flared as both players were involved in a heated altercation towards the end of City’s 1-0 victory.

Following the match, Roar coach Michael Valkanis and City chief executive Brad Rowse were involved in a confrontation on the field, adding to the tense atmosphere. However, the focus has shifted to the allegations against Memeti for racially abusing Vidic, who is of Serbian descent, by reportedly using a derogatory term with negative implications in the Balkan region.

Vidic was visibly upset at the end of the game and confronted Memeti, leading to concerns about the situation escalating further. Memeti downplayed the incident in his post-match interview, attributing Vidic’s reaction to disappointment over the loss.

If the claims against Memeti are substantiated, he could be subject to disciplinary action by Football Australia, potentially resulting in a significant suspension. Melbourne City has not issued a statement regarding the matter at this time.

Overall, the incident highlights the importance of addressing discriminatory behavior in sports and promoting a respectful and inclusive environment for all players.
