Restrictions Placed on Grok’s Controversial AI Image-Generation Feature

Elon Musk’s AI company, Grok, has faced heavy criticism for its image-generation feature that allowed users to create sexualized and nude images of women and children. In response to the backlash, Grok has decided to restrict this feature to only paying subscribers on the platform X.

As of now, only paying subscribers on X will have access to the image-generation and editing capabilities on Grok. However, it’s important to note that these restrictions do not apply to the Grok app, which continues to allow anyone to generate images without requiring a subscription.

Initially, Grok’s image generation feature was available to all users with daily limits. This feature allowed users to upload photos and request edits or generate sexualized or nude versions of the images. The result was a flood of non-consensual images of children, celebrities, and public figures, sparking outrage globally.

Both X and Elon Musk have publicly condemned the misuse of Grok’s tool to create illegal and inappropriate content. Musk stated that anyone using Grok to produce illegal content would face consequences similar to uploading illegal content on the platform.

Various countries, including the U.K., the European Union, and India, have criticized X and Grok for allowing such misuse of its technology. The EU has requested XAI to retain all documentation related to the chatbot, while India’s communications ministry has mandated immediate changes to prevent the misuse of image generation features or risk losing safe harbor protections in the country. The U.K.’s communications watchdog has also been in contact with XAI regarding this issue.
