Light snow in the Denver metro area was expected to taper off by mid-morning on Friday, although temperatures just above freezing were anticipated to linger throughout the day.

Meteorologist Kenley Bonner predicted that less than an inch of snow would blanket the city and surrounding neighborhoods Friday morning, while the foothills could see up to two inches of snowfall.

“It appears we are experiencing one last burst right now, with conditions expected to improve after this,” she stated around 6 a.m. The National Weather Service in Boulder issued a hazardous weather alert cautioning about slippery roads in the metro area until approximately 11 a.m.

Colorado road conditions

Drivers in Denver reported encountering icy and snowy roadways on Friday morning. A two-lane closure was in place on Interstate 70 eastbound near Exit 276A at Steele Street due to an accident, resulting in a 15-minute delay. The closure was lifted by 7:30 a.m.

A semi-truck slid off on U.S. 285 southbound between Morrison Road and Parmalee Gulch Road, forcing the road to be closed until around 8:30 a.m., as reported by the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. A stalled vehicle led to the closure of a single center lane on Interstate 25 southbound between Downing Street and University Boulevard.

Gusty winds were also anticipated on Friday, potentially causing blowing snow and reduced visibility on Interstate 70 east of Denver, according to Bonner.

Denver police initiated a crash alert on Friday morning, indicating that officers would only respond to more serious accidents.

Friday weather forecast

Temperatures hovering around freezing were projected to persist throughout the day, with the possibility of roads refreezing by Friday evening, Bonner mentioned. Denver was expected to reach a high of 34 degrees on Friday before dropping to the teens overnight.

The city is anticipated to experience a slight warming trend over the weekend, with high temperatures reaching the mid-40s on Saturday and mid-50s on Sunday, accompanied by clear skies.
