The Alleged Murder of a Security Guard at a Brooklyn Subway Station

A tragic incident unfolded at a Brooklyn subway station when a security guard, Nicola Tanzi, was brutally attacked and killed by a madman. The suspect, David Mazariegos, 25, has been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial for the heinous crime, as revealed in court on Friday.

Mazariegos, a struggling artist with a history of criminal behavior, allegedly launched a merciless and unprovoked attack on Tanzi on October 7, 2025, at MetroTech. The 64-year-old security guard, known for his dedication to his job, was senselessly beaten to death at the Jay Street-MetroTech station.

During the court hearing, Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Dineen Riviezzo announced that Mazariegos had been found unfit for trial and would be committed to a state psychiatric hospital for treatment. The judge extended well wishes to the accused, acknowledging the need for his improvement before any legal proceedings can take place.

If deemed mentally fit in the future, Mazariegos will face charges of first-degree murder and other offenses related to the attack on Tanzi. Prosecutors detailed how Mazariegos viciously assaulted the security guard, inflicting severe injuries that ultimately led to Tanzi’s tragic death.

Following the attack, Mazariegos allegedly stole Tanzi’s belongings, including debit and credit cards, to purchase a weapon. He was apprehended by police in Times Square, with the stolen items and a samurai sword in his possession.

Despite his arrest, Mazariegos showed a disturbing lack of remorse, grinning with a broken-tooth smile during his arraignment. Prosecutors revealed that he confessed to the assault, robbery, and claimed to have taken Tanzi’s “spirit” during the brutal incident.

With his attorney declining to comment after the recent court hearing, the case remains unresolved as Mazariegos undergoes psychiatric evaluation and treatment. The memory of Nicola Tanzi, a devout Catholic and dedicated security guard, lives on as justice awaits in the aftermath of this tragic event.
