Star batter Shreyas Iyer made a triumphant return to action in the first ODI between India and New Zealand on Sunday, January 11, at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. The Men in Blue emerged victorious by four wickets, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

New Zealand batted first and posted a total of 300/8 from their allotted 50 overs. In response, India successfully chased down the target in 49 overs. Batting at number four, Shreyas Iyer played a crucial role in the chase, scoring 49 runs off 47 balls, including four boundaries and a six, at a strike rate of 104.26.

Although he narrowly missed out on his half-century, Iyer’s knock was impressive considering it was his comeback in international cricket. He also shared a vital 77-run partnership with Virat Kohli for the third wicket.

Fans lauded Iyer for his significant contribution during the run-chase, especially after his recent return from injury. One fan on X wrote, “Well Played Shreyas Iyer 🫡He is coming from the injury break, and team is chasing a 300 and he decides to step up with 49 in 47 balls and make the great partnership with Virat Kohli. No one can replace him at No.4. The best No. 4 after Yuvi for India 🇮🇳.”

Iyer had suffered a laceration injury to his spleen during the Australia tour, which had kept him out of action. Despite missing India’s home series against South Africa, he made a successful recovery and was cleared to play against New Zealand.

In his ODI career against New Zealand, Iyer has displayed a solid record. In 11 matches, he has amassed 660 runs at an average of 66.0 and a strike rate of 98.8. He has scored two centuries and four half-centuries against the Kiwis, with notable innings including scores of 103, 105, 52, 62, 80, and 79.

Looking ahead, Iyer will aim to continue his impressive form against New Zealand in the remaining two matches of the series. His performance in the first ODI was a testament to his skill and determination, and fans are eager to see more from the talented batter in the upcoming games.
