“Backyard Sports” fans are in for a treat this month as a new animated TV special featuring Pablo Sanchez and his team of kid athletes from the ’90s era is set to be released. The special stars a talented cast including Tiffany Haddish, Chris Mintz-Plasse, Donald Faison, Ego Nwodim, Ashleigh Crystal Hairson, Adam Pally, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Arturo Castro, Lindsay Barnett, Deborah Barker Jr., and Michael Vlamis.
The story revolves around Stephanie ‘Bubbles’ Morgan, the team superstar, who loses her lucky bubble gum just 30 minutes before game time. The Backyard kids embark on a wild mission to find the gum and save their season. The animated special will premiere on YouTube later this month after debuting at Dave & Buster’s as part of a partnership with Playground Productions.
Written by Joe Purdy and directed by Mike Roberts, the special is produced by Animation Production Lighthouse Studios. This project is the latest in a series of endeavors to revive the iconic ’90s video game, with Playground Productions re-releasing the original games for modern platforms and working on a new “Backyard Sports” game, as well as TV and film projects based on the characters.
Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett expressed excitement about bringing these animated characters to life and telling stories in the “Backyard Sports” universe. The cast of actors was carefully chosen to bring humor, humanity, and fun to the project, capturing the spirit of the franchise.
Executive produced by Chris Waters, Lindsay Barnett, Avi Savitski, and Ari Pinchot, the special features music by Jonny Shorr and is line produced by Phil Crain. The cast members are represented by various agencies, including Innovative Artists Entertainment, Verve, Artists First, CAA, WME, Untitled, Gersh, 3Arts, UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Fuller Law.
The release date for the “Backyard Sports” animated special will be announced soon, and fans can look forward to a fun-filled adventure with their favorite characters from the beloved ’90s video game.
