Law enforcement officials reported that the car ran over two sets of road spikes before colliding with an oncoming truck. Despite the grave danger, both officers and bystanders bravely intervened to extinguish the flames and rescue the passengers. Approximately 18 fire extinguishers were used to douse the fire, with Inspector Phil Gillbanks commending their courageous efforts that ultimately saved lives.
While the passengers were rushed to the hospital in serious condition, the young driver tragically succumbed to the impact of the crash. In addition to the passengers’ injuries, several officers sustained minor burns and smoke inhalation during the rescue operation.
The vehicle had been flagged by the police following its involvement in an aggravated robbery in Tauranga the day before. Authorities are appealing to the public for any dashcam or CCTV footage featuring the silver Lexus sedan with license plate DZS7.
Following a thorough scene examination that concluded late Tuesday night, the road was reopened at midnight. A critical incident investigation is currently underway, with the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) duly notified.
