The Wānaka lakefront is set to receive some much-needed TLC as a spring water feature undergoes a makeover later this month. Richard Windelov, the creator of the spring, is calling on the community to come together and support the revitalization of this special space.

Originally inspired to build the spring in 2007, Windelov has seen his vision come to life with the water being turned on in 2012. Now, with plans for significant improvements in the works, he is reaching out to the “Friends of the Spring” for assistance.

As a proud Wānaka local, Windelov views the spring as a free resource for the community to enjoy. He believes in the healing powers of clean water and hopes that the use of the spring will inspire others to appreciate the natural resources available in their own towns.

The upcoming renovation plans include making the area more functional, practical, beautiful, and safe. From hand-selected stones to sculptures, such as a taniwha carved by Windelov himself, the goal is to enhance the space and create a sense of ownership among community members, especially children who will be invited to name the taniwha.

Improvements for the spring will involve replacing a metal plate with stone, concreting down larger stones, trimming and polishing existing stones, and ensuring wheelchair accessibility. While the work is currently self-funded, Windelov is seeking sponsorships and hopes to establish a “Friends of the Spring” group to support ongoing efforts.

With a working bee day planned for next Sunday, Windelov is excited to see the community come together to celebrate the water and contribute to the enhancement of this special place. Through honoring and celebrating the land, he envisions a future where the spring continues to provide an incredible resource for all to enjoy.
