Anthropic, a U.S. AI startup, has made a significant move by appointing Irina Ghose, a former managing director at Microsoft India, to lead its operations in India. This strategic decision comes as Anthropic gears up to establish a presence in Bengaluru, highlighting India’s growing importance as a key battleground for AI companies seeking expansion beyond the U.S.

Ghose brings a wealth of experience in the big-tech industry, having spent 24 years at Microsoft before stepping down in December 2025. Her deep understanding of the local market, along with established relationships with enterprises and government officials, positions Anthropic for success in one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets.

India has emerged as a critical market for Anthropic, with the country ranking as the second-largest user base for Claude, Anthropic’s AI tool. Usage in India is predominantly focused on technical and work-related tasks, such as software development. The competition in the Indian AI market is intensifying, with rival companies like OpenAI also eyeing expansion in the region.

Despite India’s vast potential with over a billion internet subscribers and 700 million smartphone users, converting reach into revenue remains a challenge for AI companies. To attract users, companies like OpenAI have experimented with aggressive pricing strategies, such as offering affordable plans like ChatGPT Go. Similarly, Anthropic has seen a significant increase in downloads and consumer spending in India, signaling growing traction in the market.

Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, has been actively engaging with Indian corporate executives and lawmakers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to discuss expansion plans and adoption of their AI tools. The company had explored partnerships with major players like Reliance Industries to broaden access to Claude, emphasizing the role of telecom giants in distributing AI services in India.

In her announcement on LinkedIn, Ghose highlighted her focus on working with Indian enterprises, developers, and startups to drive adoption of Claude for mission-critical use cases. She emphasized the importance of high-trust, enterprise-grade AI tailored to local languages, highlighting the potential impact on sectors like education and healthcare.

As Anthropic expands its presence in India, job listings for various roles indicate a concerted effort to deepen go-to-market strategies and engage with Indian businesses and startups. The company is poised to leverage India’s growing AI ecosystem and position itself as a key player in the country’s AI landscape.

Overall, Anthropic’s appointment of Irina Ghose underscores its commitment to India and its strategic approach to capitalize on the country’s burgeoning AI market. With a focus on distribution partnerships, pricing strategies, and enterprise adoption, Anthropic is poised to establish a strong foothold in India and emerge as a long-term player in the AI industry.
