Selma Blair is currently facing significant online criticism following the launch of her new sleepwear collection, which is inspired by her experience with multiple sclerosis. Detractors accuse her of “cashing in” on her diagnosis of the disease.

RadarOnline.com reports that Blair, 53, known for her roles in films like Legally Blonde and Cruel Intentions, introduced the Sea La Vie by Selma Blair collection in partnership with Mersea, a women-owned lifestyle brand.

Blair has collaborated with lifestyle brand Mersea to create the Sea La Vie line.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in August 2018, Blair says the sleepwear line was inspired by her personal experiences during treatment, where comfort and quality clothing were essential to her recovery. Her collection, developed over nine to 10 months, includes pyjama sets, a sleep jacket, and accessories inspired by her journey, with references to her family and service dog, Scout.

The launch has sparked a strong reaction online, with some accusing Blair of “exploiting” her condition for profit. A fashion industry source stated, “There is a real undercurrent of trolling around this. People are saying she is cashing in on her disease, which is a brutal accusation given what she has gone through.”

Critics have accused Blair of ‘cashing in’ and ‘exploiting’ her 2018 multiple sclerosis diagnosis for profit.

Another source from the business sector mentioned that the situation has ignited a debate about the boundary between raising awareness and commercializing a diagnosis, with many feeling uneasy about its presentation.

Blair has been candid about how comfort played a crucial role during her illness, recounting how luxury loungewear during treatment made her feel cared for. “I was going through a lot of treatments, and I had just been diagnosed (with multiple sclerosis)
and I got this really amazing care package in the mail,” she said. “I was in bed, but in these cashmere pieces,” she continued. “When I was being treated in the hospital, I was also wearing things that felt rich, and I felt taken care of.”

The actress explained luxury loungewear helped her feel ‘taken care of’ during intensive hospital treatments.

Blair mentioned that reconnecting with Mersea’s founders led to the collaboration when her health started improving. “I always wear their things,” she shared. “When I started getting better, I got in touch and said, ‘Would you be interested in doing this collaboration?'”

Blair also expressed her love for relaxation, saying, “I like bed a lot. When people say, ‘What’s your bedtime ritual,’ I’m like, ‘Pyjamas. Go to bed, don’t talk to me.'” The collection features design elements reflecting Blair’s personal experiences, such as embroidered self-love motifs and pieces inspired by her family life. A bandana pays tribute to her service dog, and the overall aesthetic focuses on comfort and ease, directly addressing the physical demands of living with MS.

The ‘Cruel Intentions’ star previously expanded into the wellness market with a targeted skincare collaboration.

The release of this collection follows Blair’s previous ventures into the wellness and beauty market, including a skincare collaboration with ESK in September 2025, which came after she faced inflammation and rosacea prior to her diagnosis. She remarked, “Once I used this ESK calming cleanser for a week, I noticed a difference in the inflammation, and the rosacea went down.”

Blair added, “I knew Retin-A was too active for me, and I sought out the brand because I loved that I could get this online and that it wouldn’t be aggravating.”

In 2025, Blair announced she was “truly in remission” after years of treatment. She observed, “I am doing amazingly well. I’ve been feeling great for about a year. But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely
I always try to feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy, and getting out and going out isn’t so scary.”
