Renault to fold Ampere EV and software unit back into group – report

French carmaker Renault is set to dissolve its electric vehicle and software arm Ampere Holding and integrate its activities into the broader group starting from 1 July. This move, as reported by Reuters, aims to streamline the organization, cut costs, and expedite the implementation of future projects.

This decision marks the second significant shift under the leadership of new CEO François Provost, moving away from the strategies previously pursued by Luca de Meo, who left last year to join luxury group Kering. In a similar move in December, Renault announced the shutdown of the car-sharing operations of its Mobilize subsidiary, bringing back its energy and data businesses into the group.

Ampere Holding was launched in November 2023 as Europe’s first pure-play business focused on electric vehicles and software, with plans for a stock market flotation. However, the company decided to drop the IPO in early 2024 due to inadequate market valuations. Following this, Renault stated that abandoning the IPO provided an opportunity to review Ampere’s governance and operating model, streamline the structure, and enhance the unit’s contribution while retaining its original effectiveness.

Since September, Ampere has been led by Renault Group CTO Philippe Brunet and is now expected to serve as the company’s advanced engineering hub for electric vehicles and software. The electricity division plants in northern France, along with the engine facility, will revert to being direct Renault subsidiaries.

The reorganization has been presented to trade unions and is not anticipated to alter employment conditions or contracts for most of the employees affected. In recent developments, Renault unveiled its new Filante hybrid crossover vehicle at a launch event in South Korea. The model, based on Chinese automaker Geely’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, will be produced at Renault Korea’s Busan plant and will be available for sale in South Korea in March 2026 before being shipped to markets in South America and the Gulf States region.
