Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar Takes Initial Steps for Potential Gubernatorial Run
On Thursday, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar submitted documentation to the state’s campaign finance board, signaling the early stages of a possible campaign for governor.
A source familiar with the senator’s plans—who requested anonymity to discuss private matters—described this move as a necessary “preliminary step” for anyone contemplating a run. They hinted that Klobuchar is poised to reveal her intentions in the near future.
Should Klobuchar decide to enter the race for Minnesota governor, her candidacy could provide a much-needed lifeline for Democrats in a state currently reeling from a federal investigation related to a fraud scandal that poses a threat to Governor Tim Walz’s reelection hopes. Earlier this month, Walz declared his intention to bow out of seeking a third term.
Democratic leaders in Minnesota view Klobuchar—known for her ability to attract votes as the state’s most successful electoral candidate—as a significant asset for the party, particularly in bolstering down-ballot efforts.
It appears that Klobuchar might have a clear path within the Democratic field, especially after Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced on Tuesday that he would not be pursuing the governor’s seat.
Meanwhile, Republicans are gearing up for a competitive primary, with notable contenders such as MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, state Representative Kristin Robbins, and attorney Chris Madel all throwing their hats into the ring.
