Rep. LaMonica McIver Faces Federal Charges Following Altercation with ICE Agents

In a dramatic turn of events, Democrat Representative LaMonica McIver has been charged by the Justice Department for allegedly assaulting agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The announcement was made public by U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, who detailed the charges against McIver.

“Today, my office has filed charges against Congresswoman McIver for violating Title 18, United States Code, Section 111(a)(1), which pertains to assaulting, impeding, and interfering with law enforcement officials,” Habba stated on Monday evening, emphasizing the principle that “no one is above the law—politicians included.”

Footage from ICE body cameras has surfaced, allegedly showing Rep. McIver engaging in both verbal and physical confrontations with federal agents at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. This incident reportedly occurred during a congressional visit intended to inspect conditions for detainees.

During this visit, members of Congress, including Rep. McIver and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, encountered a chaotic situation when an altercation erupted, leading to McIver reportedly physically confronting ICE agents. Witnesses described the scene as tumultuous, with McIver declaring, “I touch whoever I want, motherf*cker!”

McIver’s Defense: Political Motivations Behind the Charges

In the aftermath of these accusations, Rep. McIver issued a statement on Monday evening, contending that the charges are politically motivated. She contends that the situation escalated due to actions taken by ICE agents during what should have been a routine oversight visit.

“Earlier this month, I joined my colleagues to inspect the treatment of ICE detainees at Delaney Hall in my district. Our oversight responsibilities should have ensured a peaceful and brief visit. However, the arrest of Mayor Baraka by ICE agents led to an unnecessary confrontation. These charges mischaracterize my actions and aim to intimidate legislative oversight,” McIver asserted. “This administration will not deter me from advocating for my constituents and standing up for justice. I appreciate all the support I’ve received and look forward to presenting the truth in court.”
