Community news is always buzzing with exciting updates and changes in the art world. This week, we have some interesting developments to share, including new appointments, award winners, and a head-scratching look at the upcoming Whitney Museum Biennial. Let’s dive into the latest from the art community.

First up, Jean Cooney is set to take on the role of executive director at Creative Time starting in February. Cooney, currently the director of Times Square Arts and vice president of Arts and Culture at the Times Square Alliance, is no stranger to Creative Time. She previously worked at the institution for seven years, overseeing projects like Kara Walker’s acclaimed installation at the former Domino Sugar factory. Congratulations to Jean on her new position!

In other news, Sally Tallant, who has been leading the Queens Museum through a period of expansion and controversy, is stepping down from her role as president and executive director. Yasha Grobman has been named the new director general of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, while Kristen Shepherd is taking on the role of president and CEO at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Additionally, Amy Sherald has signed with the Creative Artists Agency, adding another feather to her cap.

On the awards front, Antonio Paucar has been named the winner of the Artes Mundi 11 prize, with Sancintya Mohini Simpson taking home the Derek Williams Trust Artes Mundi Purchase Prize. Marisa Sage is also set to become the new executive director of the New Mexico Museum of Art.

Finally, the Whitney Museum of American Art has caught our attention with its recent Instagram post teasing a “cosmic look” at the artists participating in the 2026 Biennial. The post breaks down the 56 participants by astrological sign and element, with Cancer and Leos leading the pack. Will birth charts replace wall labels at the exhibition? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – the Whitney’s social media team may need a break!

That’s all for this week’s roundup of art news. Stay tuned for more updates and happenings in the vibrant world of contemporary art.
