NASCAR’s playoff format has been a topic of debate among fans and drivers alike, with Jeff Burton recently speaking out about where the sport went wrong. In a conversation with Kenny Wallace, Burton acknowledged that NASCAR had good intentions when implementing the playoff format but failed to realize the mistake until it was too late.

Burton emphasized that the changes made were intended to improve the sport for fans, rather than abandon or insult their intelligence. He expressed frustration with the notion that NASCAR doesn’t care about its core fans, stating, “They were never not considered. That’s where I get a little frustrated with these conversations is because when someone says, ‘they don’t care what I think.'”

Denny Hamlin, a vocal critic of the playoffs, has since expressed relief with the Chase format, which rewards consistent frontrunners over wild card winners. The decision to switch to the playoff format was influenced by Matt Kenseth’s 2003 championship win with a race to spare, prompting NASCAR to want a more competitive title fight in the final race. However, Hamlin believes that any driver who can replicate Kenseth’s feat deserves the title regardless.

Kenseth himself has criticized the constant focus on points discussions that emerged with the playoff format, suggesting that the championship became overshadowed by the points system.

In a surprising turn of events, Jeff Burton has been replaced as the head of the Drivers Advisory Council by longtime NASCAR executive Chip Wile. The DAC, which was established in 2022 with Burton at the helm, serves as a liaison between drivers and NASCAR, addressing safety, competition feedback, and day-to-day issues. The council includes active drivers like William Byron, Chase Briscoe, Joey Logano, and Michael McDowell, as well as former drivers Kurt Busch and Kyle Petty.

As NASCAR continues to evolve with the new Chase format, Burton will transition into an advisory role while continuing his work as an analyst for NBC Sports. The DAC, under Wile’s leadership, will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the sport and maintaining a strong relationship between drivers and the sanctioning body.
