David Hutchinson, the board chairman of Tūhura Otago Museum, is gearing up for a challenging swim across Cook Strait. The University of Otago physics professor is taking on this daunting task to raise funds for a new fire sprinkler system at the museum.

With a rich history and a vast collection of over 1.5 million items, the museum faces financial strains due to limited funding. Prof Hutchinson hopes to draw attention to the importance of preserving New Zealand’s past and the need for support in maintaining museum infrastructure.

His fundraising swim idea emerged during a swim in Otago Harbour, where he realized the significance of water as both a challenge and a solution. The funds raised will contribute towards the installation of additional fire sprinklers to safeguard the museum’s priceless collections.

Swimming across Cook Strait is no easy feat, especially for someone of Prof Hutchinson’s age. Despite the risks posed by the harsh conditions and marine life, he remains determined to support the museum’s cause.

As he embarks on this demanding journey, Prof Hutchinson emphasizes the importance of caring for the museum’s treasures, which hold cultural significance not just for Otago but for all of New Zealand.

While national funding for museum collections remains limited, he hopes that his swim will spark a conversation about the need for greater support in preserving these valuable assets.
