San Diego Comic-Con is renowned for its influential panels focused on popular culture, yet it is equally celebrated for its intricate cosplayer community. Each year, enthusiasts of comics, video games, film, and fantasy dedicate months to crafting costumes that reflect their passion for beloved characters and franchises.

Sarah Lu, 27, recently relocated to San Diego and started working on her costume of Toothless, the dragon from DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon,” back in January, investing around $400 into the project.

“For me, it’s a blend of theater, music, and dance, as I employ all these skills to breathe life into a character. There’s a certain magic to that,” she shared with Reuters on the convention floor.

While some costumes gain significant attention at Comic-Con, others remain less noticed. San Diego’s Jose Samaniego, 21, believes attitude is key to success.

“Be confident in yourself,” he advised. “If you’re not confident in your cosplay, you’ll project a negative vibe, and people won’t respond well. If you don’t like your outfit, it will show,” he added.

With Comic-Con occurring in the summer, cosplayers in elaborate outfits must also manage the heat.

“How do you stay cool? Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate,” advised David Martinez, 54, a project manager for a pharmaceutical company in San Diego, who dressed as a blend of Spider-Man and Bob Ross.

Despite extensive preparation, costumes can encounter issues.

High temperatures can cause glue to soften, leading to parts falling off, and fabric may tear.

This is where Bryan Mero, a costume repair enthusiast, steps in to assist attendees. Dressed as Fix-it Felix from Disney’s “Wreck-it Ralph,” Mero roams the convention floor with a yellow hammer and a backpack full of repair tools.

Lu referred to Mero as the “MVP” of the convention.

“I carry supplies for any cosplay repair needs: superglue, duct tape, safety pins, bobby pins, hairspray, hair ties in various colors, a soldering iron, and a hot glue gun. My pack weighs about 15 pounds,” he explained.

“I offer these services for free, simply asking people to pay it forward,” Mero added.

San Diego Comic-Con is a yearly multi-genre entertainment and comic book convention held in San Diego, California, celebrating comics, popular culture, and related media.
