Donald Trump has consistently emphasized the importance of regaining control of the Justice Department, viewing it as crucial to his political and personal agenda. If he secures re-election, Trump will immediately focus on halting the federal criminal cases against him, both active and dismissed but sought to be reinstated by special counsel Jack Smith. Targeting his perceived political adversaries is also a top priority for Trump, with plans to go after individuals such as his opponent Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, and members of the House Jan. 6 select committee.

In his pursuit of a do-over in choosing Justice Department appointees, Trump is determined to select individuals who are fiercely loyal to him. Learning from past mistakes, Trump aims to avoid appointing officials who may obstruct his directives, like Sally Yates and Jim Comey, and those who may not demonstrate unwavering loyalty, like Jeff Sessions.

The criteria for appointees in a potential second Trump administration prioritize loyalty above all else, with competency following closely behind. Trump is reportedly seeking candidates who are completely subservient to him, according to former Trump administration officials and critics like Ty Cobb.

When it comes to key positions such as attorney general, deputy attorney general, and FBI director, Trump is considering a range of candidates, including Jeffrey Clark, who played a significant role in supporting Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. While Senate confirmation may pose a challenge for some polarizing figures, Trump may opt for acting appointments to bypass this hurdle temporarily.

Senators Mike Lee, Josh Hawley, and Eric Schmitt are among the potential candidates for top Justice Department positions, given their staunch support for Trump and likely smooth confirmation process. Additionally, former Trump administration officials like John Ratcliffe, Jeffrey Jensen, and Will Levi are being considered for key roles within the department.

Other contenders include Mike Davis, Kash Patel, and Judge Aileen Cannon, with the latter receiving praise from Trump for favorable rulings during his presidency. Trump’s selection of appointees for the Justice Department reflects his emphasis on loyalty, with a focus on individuals who align with his agenda and are willing to carry out his directives without question.
