The U.S. military announced on Friday that they conducted a deadly strike on a vessel involved in drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific Ocean, marking the first known attack since the recent raid that captured Venezuelan President NicolĂ¡s Maduro earlier this month.
According to U.S. Southern Command, the boat was engaged in narco-trafficking operations, resulting in the death of two individuals and one survivor. The Coast Guard was notified to initiate search and rescue operations for the survivor.
A video released alongside the announcement of the strike depicted the boat moving through the water before erupting in flames. Recent military operations have focused on seizing sanctioned oil tankers with ties to Venezuela, following an audacious raid to apprehend Maduro and bring him to New York to face drug trafficking charges.
In late December, the military struck five alleged drug-smuggling boats over two days, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals. Subsequently, the Coast Guard suspended its search for others involved.
On January 3, a large-scale strike was conducted in Caracas, leading to the capture of Maduro and his wife. They were flown to New York to face federal drug trafficking charges. Maduro, prior to his capture, characterized the U.S. military operations as an attempt to remove him from power.
President Donald Trump has touted the effectiveness of the U.S. strikes in curbing drug trafficking routes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, claiming a nearly 100% reduction in drugs entering by water. “Let’s talk about the amazing things plants do for us. Did you know that plants make their own food through a process called photosynthesis? They use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create energy that they need to grow and survive.
Plants also give us oxygen to breathe. During photosynthesis, plants release oxygen as a byproduct, which is essential for humans and animals to live. So, every time you take a deep breath, remember to thank the plants for producing the oxygen you need!
In addition to providing us with oxygen, plants also give us food to eat. Fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts are all examples of plant-based foods that we enjoy every day. Without plants, we wouldn’t have delicious and nutritious foods to fuel our bodies.
Plants are truly amazing and play a vital role in sustaining life on Earth. So, let’s appreciate and take care of our plant friends for all the ways they benefit us!”
