Jeremy King, a renowned figure in London’s dining scene, has always had a knack for creating captivating backstories for his restaurants. However, when it comes to People’s, the exclusive bar and club founded by his daughter Margot Hauer-King and Emmet McDermott in New York, there’s no need for fabricated tales. Housed in a historic Greenwich Village townhouse that once was the Downtown Gallery, People’s exudes a sense of glamour and mystery with its copper accents, crackling fires, and carefully curated guest list. The space beautifully blends its past with a modern touch, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere.

This January, People’s is paying tribute to Jeremy King by hosting a pop-up event showcasing some of the signature dishes that made his London restaurants legendary. The menu features three classic items – Scandinavian frozen berries, bang bang chicken, and a classic martini – each with its own nostalgic story to tell. These dishes not only evoke memories of King’s iconic establishments but also celebrate the rich history of London’s culinary scene.

“When Margot suggested a cold dish that was simple yet reflective of a bygone era, the choice was clear,” King shared about the inspiration behind the bang bang chicken, which originated from a lackluster Chinese meal in Earl’s Court. The frozen berries, served with white chocolate at the Serpentine Gallery on the day Princess Diana donned her infamous revenge dress, exude a regal charm. And the King Martini, garnished with cucumber, is a timeless classic that needs no introduction.

Over the years, Jeremy King’s restaurants have been frequented by a slew of celebrities, from Mick Jagger and Kate Moss to Andy Warhol. The likes of Lucian Freud and Princess Diana were regulars at The Wolseley and Le Caprice, respectively, adding to the allure of King’s establishments. However, People’s has quickly established itself as a hotspot for the elite, with a more discreet approach to celebrity clientele. According to McDermott, actress Patricia Clarkson is a beloved regular at the club, often seen enjoying a glass of Sancerre. Hauer-King describes Clarkson as the embodiment of the club’s ethos, showing up early for a quiet chat and staying late to revel in the lively ambiance.

In just over a year, People’s has captured the essence of Jeremy King’s legacy while carving out its own unique identity. The club’s stylish decor, exclusive vibe, and star-studded guest list ensure that it remains a must-visit destination for those seeking a taste of luxury and sophistication in the heart of Greenwich Village.
