Bending Spoons: The Tech Conglomerate Quietly Reshaping the Industry

Bending Spoons, a twelve-year-old tech conglomerate based in Milan, has been making waves in the tech industry as one of the most prolific buyers of popular tech brands. Despite its significant acquisitions of companies like Meetup, WeTransfer, and Eventbrite, Bending Spoons remains relatively unknown to the general public.

What sets Bending Spoons apart from traditional private equity firms is its focus on acquiring underperforming but popular tech brands and transforming them to better serve millions of users. The company, with a team of 400 to 500 employees known as “Spooners,” aims to make improvements to products and services that others have created.

The origins of Bending Spoons trace back to Evertale, a Copenhagen-based startup that failed after participating in Disrupt SF 2011. The founders of Evertale regrouped and began acquiring tech companies, leading to the formation of Bending Spoons. Since then, the company has made significant acquisitions, including Evernote, Meetup, WeTransfer, and Eventbrite.

After acquiring these companies, Bending Spoons implements changes to enhance the user experience, improve features, update the technology, and restructure the organization. While layoffs and controversial decisions have followed some acquisitions, Bending Spoons remains focused on efficiency and revenue growth, with a long-term investment strategy.

In recent years, Bending Spoons has seen substantial growth, with a valuation exceeding $10 billion and significant investments from top firms like T. Rowe Price and Fidelity. The company’s co-founders have joined the billionaire ranks, with CEO Luca Ferrari’s stake reportedly worth $1.4 billion.

Looking ahead, Bending Spoons plans to continue acquiring new companies to expand its portfolio of consumer and enterprise digital products. The recent acquisitions of AOL and Vimeo signal a move towards more prominent targets, with the company exploring the possibility of an IPO on the NYSE to further fuel its growth.

Bending Spoons’ unique approach to acquiring and transforming tech brands has positioned it as a major player in the industry, with a focus on innovation and long-term success. As the company continues to evolve and expand its reach, it remains a key player to watch in the ever-changing tech landscape.
