Sencer asked Foege why he wasn’t staying to see the job to completion and Foege replied, “Because they don’t need me anymore.”

That sentiment, Sencer wrote, was typical of Foege; he always seemed to be looking for the next challenge, the next problem to solve, the next public health emergency that needed his attention.

This drive to make a difference defined Foege’s career. Born in 1936 in Decorah, Iowa, he studied medicine at the University of Washington, where he received his MD in 1961. He then went to Nigeria as part of a program to combat measles, an experience that shaped the course of his life.

Foege’s work in Nigeria led him to understand the importance of mass vaccination campaigns in controlling and eliminating infectious diseases. This insight was instrumental in the smallpox eradication campaign, which he helped lead during the 1970s.

Smallpox, a devastating disease that killed millions of people throughout history, was finally eradicated in 1980, thanks in large part to Foege’s efforts. His work on smallpox laid the groundwork for future global health initiatives, including the fight against polio and measles.

Throughout his career, Foege remained committed to the idea that public health interventions can save lives and improve the well-being of communities around the world. He was a tireless advocate for vaccination, disease surveillance, and other public health measures that are now taken for granted but were once revolutionary ideas.

Foege’s legacy lives on in the millions of lives he saved and the countless public health professionals he inspired. His death is a loss for the global health community, but his spirit of optimism and dedication to making the world a better place will continue to inspire future generations of public health leaders.

As the world grapples with new challenges, from emerging infectious diseases to climate change, Foege’s example serves as a reminder of the power of public health to create a healthier, more equitable world for all. Dr. Sencer urged his colleague to stay until the end and enjoy the celebrations that were to come, marking a momentous event in global health history. However, Dr. Foege humbly declined, wanting the credit to go to the hundreds of thousands of Indians who worked tirelessly to stop the spread of the virus. He believed in giving credit where it was due and felt that recognition should be given to those who truly deserved it.

Foege was known for his innovative disease containment strategy known as ring vaccination. This approach focused on containing the spread of a pathogen by vaccinating those in close contact with known cases, creating a ring of immunity to limit further transmission. This technique, later used in Ebola outbreaks, proved to be highly effective in the eradication of smallpox.

Despite his groundbreaking work, Foege refused to take sole credit for the strategy, acknowledging that similar methods had been used in the past. He emphasized the importance of mass vaccination followed by surveillance and containment of any remaining cases. His humility and dedication to public health inspired many, including those he trained in the field.

In his later years, Foege faced health challenges, including cancer and heart failure, but his sense of humor remained intact. Even in the face of rumors of his own death, he managed to find humor in the situation, joking about the confusion that ensued.

Dr. Foege’s legacy lives on through his contributions to public health and his commitment to training the next generation of health professionals. His wife, Paula, and two sons survive him, carrying on his passion for improving global health. Dr. Foege’s impact on the world of public health is immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the fight against infectious diseases.
