Smartphones have become an integral part of our daily lives, allowing us to stay connected and informed at all times. However, a recent report by Tech Advisor has revealed that smartphones can transmit personal data, including location, device IDs, and usage patterns, overnight while on standby, often without explicit user consent. This data sharing enables companies to create detailed user profiles for targeted advertising, raising significant privacy concerns for smartphone users.

According to Marijus Briedis, CTO of NordVPN, smartphones also transmit tracking or advertising-related data signals, some of which should not be transmitted without explicit consent. This data transfer is not always clear-cut, as it can include legitimate data that maintains the functionality of the device as well as sensitive data used for tracking, advertising, and other purposes.

In response to these privacy concerns, users can take steps to protect themselves. One way to reduce the sharing of background data is to check the permissions of installed apps. Apps that have access to sensitive data such as location, microphone, camera, and tracking data should only be allowed to use this data while actively in use.

Additionally, users can disable background app refresh on both iOS and Android devices to restrict automatic synchronization for cloud backups. Disabling personalized ads and resetting advertising IDs can also help limit data sharing. For additional protection, using a VPN service can reduce tracking and data sharing.

If users are particularly concerned about their smartphones sharing data, especially at night, they can choose to switch off their devices completely or put them in flight mode. These simple steps can help users protect their privacy and limit the amount of personal data being transmitted by their smartphones.

It is important for smartphone users to be aware of the data being transmitted by their devices and take proactive steps to safeguard their privacy. By following these tips, users can enjoy the benefits of their smartphones while minimizing the risks associated with data sharing.
