Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming TV adaptation of the popular PlayStation video game “God of War” has found its Thor in actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson. Known for his role in “Severance,” Ólafsson will be taking on the role of the God of Thunder in the highly anticipated series.
The storyline of the series follows Kratos and Atreus, a father and son duo on a mission to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. As they journey through the ancient world, Kratos aims to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus endeavors to show his father how to be a better human.
Ólafsson’s character, Thor, is described as a formidable figure who has faced numerous battles in his past. Despite once being a loyal soldier of Asgard and his father’s right-hand man, Thor now struggles with the haunting memories of a war fought long ago. He copes with his inner demons by drowning himself in alcohol and distancing himself from his wife and children, leading to a deep sense of isolation. However, the power and danger of the God of Thunder still lurk beneath the surface.
Joining Ólafsson in the cast are Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Teresa Palmer as Sif. The series has received a two-season order from Amazon, with pre-production currently underway in Vancouver. Ronald D. Moore serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series under his Tall Ship Productions banner.
The show is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions. Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis round out the team as co-executive producers.
