Jonathan Taylor Thomas became a household name as a teen star during his time on Home Improvement, but like the ‘90s themselves, his presence seemed to vanish overnight.
Fondly remembered as JTT by his young fans, Thomas stepped away from acting in the early 2000s, though he remains a nostalgic figure in the hearts of many.
At the peak of his career in 1996, Thomas shared with Premiere magazine, “You can’t be trapped in this bubble called the acting industry,” expressing his desire for a normal life. “The industry is neurotic and weird, and so when I go home and I play basketball with my friends, I’m not Jonathan Taylor Thomas. I’m just Jonathan. I don’t like hanging out with other actors and actresses.”
Thomas began his journey as a child actor by lending his voice to Spot in The Adventures of Spot from 1987 to 1993, starting at the tender age of 6. In 1990, he appeared on screen as Kevin Brady, the son of Greg Brady, in The Bradys.
His breakthrough came the following year when he secured the role of Randy Taylor, the middle son in Home Improvement. Starring alongside Tim Allen as his father, Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, and Patricia Richardson as his mother, Jill Taylor, the show became a major success. Zachery Ty Bryan played his older brother, Brad, while Taran Noah Smith portrayed the younger brother, Mark. The show ran for eight seasons until 1999, catapulting Thomas to stardom.

Despite his busy schedule on the sitcom, Thomas expanded his career by taking on other memorable roles. He lent his voice to young Simba in the 1994 film The Lion King, a role that remains iconic. He showcased his comedic talent in 1995’s Man of the House with Chevy Chase and brought Mark Twain‘s novel to life in Tom and Huck the same year.
In 1997, Thomas starred alongside Devon Sawa and Scott Bairstow in Wild America, a project fondly remembered. “I had a great time on that [movie]. Jonathan was amazing to work with. I remember we did school together and we had tons of great times,” Sawa told Us in August 2021. “I spoke to [Jonathan] recently, within the last year or so. I don’t keep in touch with him as much as I should, I think. He’s a great dude.”
In 1998, Thomas captured more hearts playing Jake in I’ll Be Home for Christmas with Jessica Biel. The image of JTT in a Santa suit in the desert remains a holiday favorite.
Thomas took a break from Hollywood in 1998 to attend college, even missing the final season of Home Improvement. He told People in 2013, “I’d been going nonstop since I was 8 years old. I wanted to go to school, to travel and have a bit of a break… To sit in a big library amongst books and students, that was pretty cool. It was a novel experience for me.”
His choice to pursue education surprised many, but Thomas found pride in studying philosophy and history at Harvard. He remarked at the 1999 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, “I made such a good decision because had I stayed at the show and tried to do academically what I’m doing now, I would’ve, you know, put myself in an early grave.”
In the 2000s, Thomas briefly returned to television with guest roles on shows like Ally McBeal, Smallville, 8 Simple Rules, and Veronica Mars. In 2006, he decided to step away from acting, resurfacing only in 2011 to voice young Simba for The Lion King Read-Along.
During his time away from Hollywood, Thomas completed his education, graduating from Columbia University in 2010.
Thomas made a surprising return to the screen in 2013, reuniting with his Home Improvement father for a cameo on Allen’s Last Man Standing. He portrayed John Baker, a former colleague of Mike Baxter’s (Allen) eldest daughter, Kristin Baxter (Amanda Fuller).
In their exchange, Allen’s character Mike commented, “Man, you look familiar,” to which John replied with a smirk, “Well, you know, I used to work with Kristin.” Mike responded, “That’s not it.”
Thomas had two more appearances as John Baker in 2013 and 2014, and later portrayed a different character, Randy, in a 2015 episode. He also directed three episodes of the show. Since then, he has remained largely out of the acting spotlight.
In June 2021, Thomas was seen walking his dogs in California, captured in rare public photos obtained by Us, where he was spotted vaping while wearing casual attire.
Two years later, in November 2023, he was pictured again near his Southern California home, dressed in a tan Lacoste sweater over a green shirt and jeans, as he entered a local convenience store, according to Page Six.

In 2024, Thomas’ former TV mother and friend, Richardson, shared insights into his future plans, revealing that he is more interested in directing and writing than returning to acting. “Jonathan’s not really interested in acting, he wants to direct and write,” she mentioned on the “Back to the Best” podcast.
In an exclusive interview with Us in January, Allen did not rule out the possibility of Thomas making a cameo on his new ABC sitcom, Shifting Gears. “Everything is a possibility,” Allen said, adding, “He just came back [to the last episode we filmed]. He showed up on the set.”
Allen expressed his willingness to share the screen with Thomas again, saying, “He’s literally my kid. I raised that kid for eight years on Home Improvement,” and added, “All of these are my kids and I’m kind of sick about this.”
Nearly two years after his last public appearance, Thomas reunited with Home Improvement TV mom Richardson and onscreen brother Smith in July 2026.
“My other boys ❤️,” Richardson captioned an Instagram photo with Thomas and Smith, who also stopped acting after Home Improvement.
