Amazon Prime Video has announced a new series adaptation of the popular comic book “Sex Criminals,” with actor Kumail Nanjiani set to star in the show. Nanjiani will also serve as a co-creator alongside Emily V. Gordon and Tze Chun. The original creators of the comic book, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, will executive produce the eight-episode series.
“We’re thrilled to have such talented individuals bring our comic book to life,” said Fraction and Zdarsky.
Gordon and Nanjiani will executive produce the series under their Winter Coat Films banner, along with Dani Melia. Chun will also serve as an executive producer. LuckyChap will produce the series under their first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Dani Gorin will executive produce, with Louie Hayes producing.
“‘Sex Criminals’ is exactly the kind of project Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in unconventional settings,” said Gordon and Nanjiani. “From the moment LuckyChap introduced us to Matt and Chip’s comic book, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to the screen, and we are excited to do so alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video.”
The official logline for the series reads, “Suze is a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night, she meets Jon… who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex-having, time-stopping couple would do: they rob banks.”
Chun expressed his excitement for the project, stating, “This has been my dream project for over a decade, and co-creating this show with Emily and Kumail has been one of the creative highlights of my career. We are so excited to bring this series to life with our incredible partners at LuckyChap and Prime Video.”
Nanjiani and Gordon are known for co-writing the film “The Big Sick,” which earned them an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. They also executive produced the Hulu series “Welcome to Chippendales” and co-created the Apple TV series “Little America.” Chun has worked on projects such as “Gotham” and “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” at HBO Max.
“We are honored to bring Matt and Chip’s beloved comic to life alongside the talented team of Emily, Kumail, Tze, and our partners at Amazon,” said LuckyChap. “‘Sex Criminals’ is a romantic comedy like no other, and we’re excited to share Jon and Suze’s time-stopping love story with audiences.”
The series will be bold, hilarious, and emotionally grounded, according to Peter Friedlander, global head of television for Amazon MGM Studios. LuckyChap is also working on other projects with Prime Video, including the YA drama “Sterling Point” and a series based on the video game “Life Is Strange.”
Nanjiani, Gordon, and Chun are represented by various agencies, while LuckyChap is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, and Jackoway Austen.
This exciting new series promises to bring a fresh and unique take on the beloved comic book to audiences worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.
