Doctors keep patient alive using ‘artificial lungs’ for two days

In 2023, thoracic surgeon Ankit Bharat faced a challenging case at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A 33-year-old patient with influenza was deteriorating rapidly due to a secondary infection with Pseudomonas. His lungs were filling with fluid, his kidneys were failing, and his heart was barely functioning. The patient’s condition was critical, and his heart even stopped at one point. Bharat and his team knew they had to act quickly.

The patient required a double-lung transplant to survive, but he was too sick for the procedure. Without functioning lungs, he would not survive. Although he was on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to assist with breathing, this treatment was ineffective without lungs. Bharat devised a plan to create artificial lungs that could oxygenate the blood and keep the patient alive long enough to receive a transplant.

The artificial lungs acted as a bridge, allowing blood to be pumped from the right side of the heart to the left side, where it could be oxygenated and circulated throughout the body. This innovative system kept the patient alive for two days, giving him a chance to recover from the infection. Eventually, the patient was placed on the lung transplant list and received new lungs, leading to his eventual discharge from the hospital.

Bharat’s approach to using artificial lungs has been hailed as a novel solution to a common problem in the medical field. While similar systems have been described before, Bharat’s method offers a unique approach that could benefit critically ill patients. His findings have been published in the journal Med, showcasing the potential for this technology to save lives.

Bharat hopes that his artificial lung system can be implemented in other hospitals as a last resort to save patients in critical condition. By sharing his methodology and lessons learned, he aims to inspire others to replicate his success. Ultimately, Bharat believes that this technology could lead to more success stories like that of the patient he saved in 2023.

As the field of medicine continues to advance, innovations like artificial lungs offer hope for patients facing life-threatening conditions. Bharat’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of medical science exemplifies the spirit of innovation and compassion that drives progress in healthcare.
