This summer has been marked by severe weather patterns, with record-breaking heatwaves and large-scale fires impacting regions across the globe. Canada has experienced significant wildfires, and Europe is currently engulfed in flames.
The constant stream of distressing news can be overwhelming, so we aim to focus on a recent development from the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC). This development highlights a crucial graphic indicating that the fire risk may reach unprecedented levels from 29 July to 2 August.
The JRC indicates that “very extreme conditions dominate a large area of western and central Europe, with the heaviest concentration across France and the Alpine arc extending into northern Italy, along with the British Isles and Ireland.” Surrounding these areas, “extreme conditions cover the wider Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans, and parts of North Africa. Very high danger stretches across southern Scandinavia, parts of eastern Europe, and further pockets in North Africa. High to moderate danger covers scattered patches of eastern Europe and TĂĽrkiye.”

The smoke poses a serious health threat that extends beyond respiratory issues, causing further environmental harm. According to a NASA Scientific Visualization Studio blog, “wildfires emit thick blankets of smoke containing toxic gases and fine particulate matter (PM2.5).” These PM2.5 aerosols can penetrate the lungs, enter the bloodstream, and exacerbate pulmonary and cardiovascular health issues. Although PM2.5 concentrations are highest near the wildfire source, smoke can travel thousands of miles, affecting air quality in distant areas.
In a significant response, UK and Spain ministers have attributed these fires to climate change, issuing a joint statement to reinforce their commitment to climate action. “This summer’s wildfires demonstrated that climate change was now a national security emergency facing Europe and threatening our way of life,” they wrote.
