Demond Wilson, ‘Sanford and Son’ Star, Passes Away at 79
Demond Wilson, best known for his role as Lamont Sanford in the popular 1970s sitcom “Sanford and Son,” passed away on Friday in Palm Springs at the age of 79. His publicist, Mark Goldman, released a statement expressing the family’s deep sadness and requesting privacy during this time of grieving. Wilson’s impact on the entertainment industry will never be forgotten, and the outpouring of support from the community is greatly appreciated.
Wilson’s son revealed to TMZ that his father’s passing was due to complications related to cancer.
Born Grady Demond Wilson, he portrayed the role of Lamont Sanford, the son of Fred Sanford played by Redd Foxx, on the NBC series “Sanford and Son,” which aired from 1972 to 1977. Wilson later took on the role of Oscar Madison in “The New Odd Couple” alongside Ron Glass.
Originally from Valdosta, Georgia, Wilson began his entertainment career in New York City, performing at the iconic Apollo Theater at a young age. After serving in Vietnam, he continued to pursue acting opportunities in New York before eventually relocating to Los Angeles.
Prior to his breakthrough role in “Sanford and Son,” Wilson made appearances on various TV series such as “Mission: Impossible” and in the film “Dealing: Or the Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick Lost Bag Blues.”
Following his success on “Sanford and Son,” Wilson went on to star in the sitcom “Baby…I’m Back!” and appeared in films like “Full Moon High,” “Hammerlock,” and “Me and the Kid.” In recent years, he made guest appearances on the series “Girlfriends.”
Aside from his acting career, Wilson also wrote Christian books and became a minister in the Church of God in Christ. He leaves behind six children with his wife, Cicely Johnston.
