Don Lemon, the former CNN anchor known for his outspoken criticism of former President Donald Trump, found himself in hot water after being slapped with federal charges for his involvement in a church protest in Minnesota. The arrest took place in Los Angeles, where Lemon was caught off guard in an elevator at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

The charges stem from an incident where Lemon allegedly joined anti-ICE protesters in storming a Twin Cities church during a service. The protesters were reportedly upset to learn that the pastor of the church was affiliated with ICE, prompting them to disrupt the service. Lemon’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, argued that his client was simply engaging in constitutionally protected journalism by covering the protest.

Federal authorities indicted Lemon on charges of conspiracy to deprive rights and interfering with First Amendment rights. The arrest was celebrated on the White House’s official X account, with a post that read, “When life gives you lemons…”

The incident at the church came in the wake of a fatal shooting by an immigration officer in Minneapolis, adding fuel to the already heated debate surrounding ICE and immigration policies. Lemon documented the protest for his show, “The Don Lemon Show,” where he interviewed the church’s lead pastor, Jonathan Parnell, who condemned the protest as “shameful.”

Despite repeated attempts by the Justice Department to issue arrest warrants for Lemon and other protesters involved in the church takeover, they were initially unsuccessful. However, Lemon’s arrest in Los Angeles coincided with independent journalist Georgia Fort also being taken into custody by federal agents.

The charges against Lemon could result in a lengthy prison sentence if he is convicted on both counts. Along with Fort, a total of seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the church protest. Lemon is expected to appear in court in Los Angeles to face the charges brought against him.

The unfolding events surrounding Lemon’s arrest have sparked a debate about press freedom and the limits of constitutional rights. As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how Lemon and his legal team will defend against the federal charges. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
