Former NFL safety Darius Butler, who played alongside Tom Brady during their time with the New England Patriots, recently expressed his disappointment with the lack of diversity in the 2026 NFL coaching hiring cycle. Out of the 10 teams with coaching vacancies, not a single Black coach was hired, with only one Black offensive coordinator being appointed. In a tweet on Monday, Butler highlighted the issue, stating, “10 vacancies. Not 1 Black hire. 1 Black OC. We got a pipeline problem!”

ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter also weighed in on the coaching hires, mentioning that Joe Brady landed in Buffalo, Mike McCarthy in Pittsburgh, Jesse Minter in Baltimore, and John Harbaugh with the Giants. Other notable appointments included Kevin Stefanski in Atlanta, Jeff Hafley in Miami, Robert Saleh in Tennessee, Todd Monken in Cleveland, Mike LaFleur in Arizona, and Klint Kubiak in Las Vegas. Six of the newly hired coaches are first-time head coaches, most of whom come from offensive coordinator backgrounds.

Saleh, a Lebanese-American, was the only minority hire in the coaching cycle, further emphasizing the lack of diversity in NFL coaching staffs. Currently, the NFL has only three Black active head coaches: Todd Bowles (Buccaneers), Aaron Glenn (Jets), and DeMeco Ryans (Texans). Recent changes, such as Mike Tomlin’s resignation in Pittsburgh, Raheem Morris’ dismissal in Atlanta, and Miami’s decision to move on from Mike McDaniel, who identifies as biracial, have further reduced the number of minority head coaches in the league.

In the midst of these coaching changes, the Las Vegas Raiders made a notable hire by bringing on Klint Kubiak as their new head coach on January 26. Interestingly, the team’s minority owner, Tom Brady, played a significant role in the hiring process. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Brady and Kubiak immediately connected during their initial interview, setting the tone for a successful recruitment process.

Raiders general manager John Spytek, who has strong ties to the Kubiak family, led the search for a new head coach but also sought input from Brady. Kubiak’s hiring marked Brady’s most visible involvement in the team’s football operations, showcasing the influence of star players in shaping coaching decisions.

Despite the ongoing challenges surrounding diversity in NFL coaching hires, it is clear that there is still work to be done to ensure equal opportunities for coaches of all backgrounds. As the league continues to evolve, it is crucial for teams to prioritize diversity and inclusion in their coaching staffs to reflect the diverse makeup of their players and fanbase.
