Copper is emerging as the next metal to watch in the market, following the historic runs of gold and silver last year. The demand for copper is soaring due to its use in power grids, electronics, and various household appliances. Analysts predict a shortfall of 150,000 tons in the global supply of copper in 2025, creating a supply and demand imbalance that is driving up prices.

Mining giant BHP forecasts a sixfold increase in copper demand by 2050, fueled by the growth of data centers globally and improving living standards in developing economies. The launch of the world’s first physically backed ETF for copper in 2024 by Sprott Asset Management saw a significant price increase of almost 46% in 2025, mirroring the performance of gold.

In the U.S., there is a trend of stockpiling copper amid fears of potential tariffs in mid-2026, further exacerbating supply challenges and pushing prices higher. Copper has become an important economic indicator, reflecting investor sentiment on the performance of the U.S. market.

While some experts predict a fall in copper prices in 2026, others see potential for sustained growth. Investing in copper-related ETFs or mining companies with copper assets could be a safer bet for investors looking to capitalize on the metal’s current momentum.

It is essential for investors to diversify their portfolios and not rely solely on single stocks or commodities. Sustainable growth should be prioritized over short-term gains. As with any investment, it is crucial to carefully consider all options and seek professional advice if needed.

Overall, copper is gaining traction as a safe-haven asset, alongside gold and silver. With increasing demand and supply challenges, the metal presents opportunities for investors looking to capitalize on the current market trends.
