Fear of ICE is casting a chill across health care, doctors say

She had been in pain for days, but her parents were too afraid to leave their home. By the time she arrived at the hospital, her eardrum had ruptured, causing further complications and prolonging her recovery time.

“It breaks your heart to see these kids suffer needlessly because their parents are too scared to seek help,” Fate said.

But it’s not just children who are being affected by this climate of fear. Pregnant women, like the one Hill encountered in North Carolina, are also facing dire consequences. The delay in seeking prenatal care can have devastating effects on both the mother and the baby, leading to stillbirths and other complications that could have been prevented with timely intervention.

Health systems across the country are grappling with the fallout of this increased fear among immigrant communities. No-show rates for appointments are on the rise, and vaccination rates are dropping, putting entire populations at risk for preventable diseases.

Providers are doing their best to adapt to these challenges, offering telehealth options and providing care from a distance to reach patients who are too afraid to leave their homes. Community outreach initiatives and intensive patient engagement programs are being rolled out to try to reverse the trend and keep people in care.

As the Trump administration’s enforcement actions continue to create a culture of fear among immigrant communities, health care providers are left to pick up the pieces and try to keep their patients healthy and safe. It’s a challenging and heartbreaking situation, but doctors like Hill and Fate are determined to do whatever it takes to ensure that no one falls through the cracks.

“We can’t let fear dictate our actions when it comes to seeking medical care,” Hill said. “Everyone deserves access to quality health care, regardless of their immigration status. We need to do better for our patients, for our communities, and for our country.”

The severe consequences of aggressive immigration enforcement on immigrant communities have come to light in recent reports. One heartbreaking case involved a young girl whose ear infection had progressed to the point of rupturing her eardrum, causing intense pain and fever that kept her from sleeping. Despite her family’s fear of seeking medical help, the infection had worsened to the point where her cheek was filled with pus. This is just one example of the detrimental impact of immigration enforcement on access to healthcare for immigrant families.

Healthcare providers have shared stories of parents hesitating to bring their babies in for care due to fear of immigration consequences. In one tragic case, a patient’s appendix burst because care was delayed, highlighting the dangerous consequences of avoiding medical treatment. The presence of ICE agents in and around health centers has created a climate of fear that deters immigrant families from seeking essential medical care.

Clinicians are also concerned about the long-term mental health effects on children of immigration raids. The trauma of family separation and the constant threat of deportation can have lasting psychological consequences on children. The mental health of immigrant children is deteriorating at an alarming rate, with providers noting a significant decline compared to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teens have been subjected to aggressive tactics by immigration enforcement, with reports of pepper spraying and physical restraint near schools. The trauma of witnessing such events can have a profound impact on the mental well-being of young immigrants. Family separation is not just a temporary disruption but a traumatic event with lifelong consequences for children and families.

While some providers in certain parts of the country have not seen significant impacts of aggressive immigration enforcement on healthcare, others serving large immigrant populations have been deeply affected. The administration’s targeting of healthcare for immigrants, including restrictions on Medicaid dollars for unauthorized care, further exacerbates the barriers to access to essential healthcare services.

The consequences of these policies are tangible for healthcare providers like Hill, who witness the devastating effects on immigrant families firsthand. The loss of a baby due to lack of access to medical care is a stark reminder of the human cost of harsh immigration policies. The challenges faced by immigrant communities in accessing healthcare highlight the urgent need for compassionate and inclusive healthcare policies that prioritize the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.
