The trial of Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s crown princess, has begun with the 29-year-old pleading not guilty to multiple charges, including four counts of rape. Høiby, who is the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship, is facing a total of 38 charges, including abuse in a close relationship, acts of violence, drug offenses, and traffic violations.

During the trial, Høiby stood for 24 minutes while the prosecutor read out the charges against him. He pleaded guilty to some of the lesser charges, such as driving offenses and drug offenses, but denied the more serious allegations of rape. The trial is expected to last until March 19, with seven alleged victims set to testify.

Despite his royal connections, Høiby is being treated like any other defendant in the eyes of the law. The judge emphasized that there is equality before the law, regardless of Høiby’s royal status. The case has attracted international attention, with the judge addressing the court in English and warning against recording or photographing the proceedings.

The investigation into Høiby began in 2024 after police were called to an apartment in Oslo following reports of a violent incident. The case expanded as more women came forward with allegations against him, leading to the filing of multiple charges last year. The indictment includes four alleged rapes between 2018 and 2024, as well as other acts of violence and drug offenses.

In a further development, Høiby was arrested on new allegations of assault, threats with a knife, and violation of a restraining order. He was remanded in custody pending trial, with his defense team considering an appeal. The royal family, including Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, have opted not to attend the trial or comment on the proceedings.

The Høiby case has posed a challenge for the royal family’s image, coming at a sensitive time as Mette-Marit faces renewed scrutiny over her past connections with Jeffrey Epstein. The release of new documents from the Epstein files revealed that Mette-Marit had stayed at an Epstein-owned property in Palm Beach in 2013. The crown princess expressed regret over her association with Epstein, acknowledging poor judgment and embarrassment over the incident.

As the trial of Marius Borg Høiby unfolds, the royal family navigates through a turbulent period, balancing legal proceedings with public scrutiny and maintaining their reputation amidst challenging circumstances.
