Leonora Carrington was a British-Mexican artist known for her surreal and fantastical artworks that transport viewers into a dreamlike world filled with mythical creatures, strange landscapes, and magical beings. Born into an upper-class family in Lancashire, Carrington rebelled against the strict expectations of high-society women in England and immersed herself in fairytales and folklore, drawing inspiration from the works of Beatrix Potter and Lewis Carroll.

Throughout her life, Carrington traveled extensively, studying art in Florence and immersing herself in the Surrealist movement in Paris. It was in Paris where she met the likes of Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, and André Breton, and formed a romantic partnership with German artist Max Ernst, whose influence can be seen in her later works.

Carrington’s art is characterized by its exploration of transformation, magic, and the esoteric. Domestic spaces such as kitchens and bedrooms serve as settings for her fantastical scenes, where plants have sprite-like faces, multiple-headed deities roam, and worlds float on animals’ backs. Her works often depict strange woodland feasts, mythical creatures, and ghostly deities, all rendered in her signature surrealist style.

After immigrating to Mexico to escape the turmoil of World War II, Carrington found a kindred spirit in Spanish painter Remedios Varo. The two artists became good friends, sharing an interest in cooking, alchemy, and cosmic forces. While they painted separately, their works shared a fascination with the esoteric and arcane.

The current exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris showcases a comprehensive survey of Carrington’s works, featuring numerous paintings and drawings created throughout her career. The exhibition, which runs from February 18 to July 19, offers a glimpse into Carrington’s fantastical world and her unique perspective on art and life.

Through her surreal and otherworldly creations, Carrington invites viewers to explore the depths of their imagination and embrace the magic and wonder of the unknown.
