The tragic incident involving the death of Nabil “Captain Bill” Adzal at a downtown boat harbor last summer has brought to light shocking details about the suspect, Alexis Trader. According to prosecutors, Trader initially called 911 to report that someone had fallen into Lake Michigan and even stayed at the scene to speak with responding police officers. Little did they know that Trader was the one responsible for Adzal’s death.

The fatal encounter took place at DuSable Harbor in the early morning hours of August 30, when Trader and three companions arrived at the locked entrance to Dock C. Dressed in all black with a hat and glasses, Trader scaled the metal grates on the gate, allowing his companions to enter. Two women in the group boarded Adzal’s yacht, where they began taking Snapchat photos on the back deck while the captain was asleep below. When Adzal discovered them, he escorted the women off the boat without any physical contact or threats.

As Adzal opened the gate to let the women out, Trader suddenly punched him, causing him to fall backward and hit his head on the metal grate before falling into Lake Michigan. Surveillance video captured the entire incident, including the sound of the punch and Adzal falling into the water. A nearby fisherman heard the splash and spoke with Trader, who suggested he jump in to help. Trader then made a 911 call from his own phone, claiming someone had fallen into the water.

Chicago Fire Department divers recovered Adzal’s body shortly after police arrived, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Detectives were able to identify Trader through surveillance footage, phone records, and witness identifications. It was revealed that Trader had a history of criminal offenses, including two pending burglary cases and a pending aggravated battery case. The battery charge stemmed from a previous incident in which Trader allegedly punched a gas station clerk, breaking his nose and requiring surgery.

Trader was ordered detained on the murder charge by Judge John Hock, as he was already in custody for the aggravated battery case. The shocking details of this case highlight the importance of thorough investigations and justice for the victims of senseless violence.
