BRITNEY SPEARS’ Struggle with Bipolar Disorder
Britney Spears, the pop princess, faced a mental breakdown in 2008 that led to her being hospitalized in a psych ward. It was during this time that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
In the same year, her father, Jamie, was appointed as her legal conservator. In 2013, Britney, now 42, revealed that her father had influenced her to stop taking her regular bipolar medication and instead prescribed lithium, a powerful mood-stabilizing drug. This medication left her feeling intoxicated and disoriented.
During a court battle to end the conservatorship in 2013, Britney disclosed, “I am bipolar, have been hospitalized for it, and had terrible experiences. I, too, had life stuff – not biological brain stuff – going on that a quick conversation would have uncovered.”
It wasn’t until 2021 that Britney was able to break free from the conservatorship. She expressed that she was now “on the right medication.”
However, there have been concerns from fans regarding Britney’s mental health. Some speculate that she may not be consistently taking her medication, pointing to erratic behavior on social media where she appears alternately elated and despondent.
