Casey Anthony was residing in Orlando with her parents, George and Cindy Anthony, when her daughter, Caylee, was reported missing on July 15, 2008.
Casey had left the family home on June 16, 2008, with her daughter and remained away for 31 days. After her car was impounded, George retrieved the vehicle, noticing a strong odor coming from the trunk. Cindy informed authorities that the car smelled like a decomposing body had been inside, although she later changed her statement.
Casey claimed she had not seen Caylee for a month and suggested that a babysitter named Zenaida Fernandez Gonzalez might have abducted her daughter.
On July 22, 2008, Casey was identified as a person of interest in the disappearance of Caylee and was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder in October.
During the investigation, Caylee’s remains were discovered wrapped in a blanket inside a laundry bag in a wooded area near the Anthony family home.
The case resulted in a widely publicized murder trial beginning on May 24, 2011. The jury ultimately acquitted Casey of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated manslaughter of a child. However, she was convicted of four misdemeanor counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer, receiving a sentence of four years in prison and a $4,000 fine.
Casey was released from jail on July 17, 2011, after receiving credit for time served and good behavior.
Years following Casey’s acquittal in 2011, Judge Belvin Perry Jr., who oversaw the case, expressed his belief that Casey “knows” what transpired with Caylee.
“She’s trying to cast herself as a seeker of the truth. Nothing can be further from the truth,” he stated in an interview with Nancy Grace on June 29.
The judge further commented that they are certain the babysitter “didn’t take” Caylee and that Casey “knows the answers.”
