President Donald Trump recently took aim at Olympic skier Hunter Hess after the athlete expressed “mixed emotions” about representing the United States at the 2026 Winter Games. Trump’s criticism of Hess was posted on Truth Social on February 8, following the skier’s comments about his feelings towards the country.

In his post, Trump referred to Hess as “a real loser,” stating, “U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics. If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Hess made his remarks during a press conference alongside fellow skier Chris Lillis, where they voiced criticism of ICE tactics and broader U.S. policies. Hess expressed conflicted emotions about representing the U.S., stating, “It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now, I think. It’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren’t.”

He went on to explain, “I think, for me, it’s more I’m representing my friends and family back home, the people that represented it before me, all the things that I believe are good about the U.S. If it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I’m representing it. Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.”

Lillis added to the conversation, expressing heartbreak over the current state of affairs in the United States, particularly mentioning ICE operations and protests. The skiers’ comments reflect broader frustrations shared by many Americans, as the country grapples with issues such as immigration enforcement, protest policing, and civil rights.

The controversy surrounding Hess and Lillis comes in the wake of Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha being booed during the opening ceremony in Milan. The public reaction to their appearance underscores the deep divisions and tensions present in American society.

Overall, the comments made by the skiers shed light on the complexities and challenges facing the nation, as people grapple with differing perspectives on key issues. The discourse surrounding representation, patriotism, and social justice continues to be a point of contention in the ongoing national conversation.
