President Donald Trump has found a new target — Abdul El-Sayed, whose recent win in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary has caught his attention. El-Sayed’s progressive policies, including Medicare for All, opposition to U.S. military aid to Israel, and the abolition of ICE, have energized Trump’s base, although El-Sayed denies being a socialist.
Critics within the Republican party have labeled El-Sayed, a Muslim, as “anti-American,” citing his association with controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, known for his inflammatory statements about Israel and the September 11, 2001 attacks. Trump has also highlighted El-Sayed’s full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, in a manner reminiscent of how he used Barack Obama’s middle name to cast doubt on his American origins.
At a Las Vegas event, Trump stated, “Abdul El-Sayed, lovely gentleman, he’s a man of hate,” adding skepticism about El-Sayed’s professed love for all people. Trump has also accused him of being a “communist” and used derogatory language to describe him.
A former Trump administration official, speaking anonymously, suggested that anti-El-Sayed rhetoric might be used to rally Trump’s base by portraying him as a threat due to his Muslim background and alleged socialist ideals.
El-Sayed responded to these accusations at a Michigan rally, emphasizing his pride in his name and expressing disbelief that someone like him could run for office. He directly addressed his opponent, Mike Rogers, warning him to avoid mispronouncing his name.
Matt Whitlock, a GOP strategist, claimed Trump’s campaign strategy involves contrasting economic successes with alleged extremism, using El-Sayed’s candidacy to emphasize this dichotomy.
The Republican criticism of El-Sayed is partly rooted in Piker’s 2019 comments suggesting that “America deserved 9/11,” although Piker later apologized. El-Sayed has declined to distance himself from Piker, emphasizing that he does not disavow people’s views.
Rogers has accused El-Sayed of anti-Semitism, but El-Sayed’s campaign pointed to a CNN interview where he refuted these claims. His spokesperson, Roxie Richner, highlighted El-Sayed’s qualifications and the coalition he has built around progressive policies, while criticizing Rogers for his extreme views.
Progressive Democrats have seen recent successes, such as Zohran Mamdani in New York and Melat Kiros in Colorado. In Wisconsin, Francesca Hong is aiming to continue this trend as a frontrunner for the gubernatorial nomination.
Michigan serves as a pivotal battleground for Trump to frame Democrats as socialists, a narrative he hopes will resonate given his narrow 2024 victory there. El-Sayed is likened to a national version of Mamdani, with Republicans suggesting that Michigan voters reject New York-style politics in Congress.
White House spokesperson Olivia Wales stated that Trump will continue to criticize El-Sayed, framing Democrats’ socialist leanings as a threat to the nation.
Graham Platner, a former Maine Senate candidate with a similar platform, was previously the focus of such attacks until allegations of misconduct ended his campaign. El-Sayed now occupies this role, providing Trump with an opportunity to revive this line of attack.
Whitlock argued that El-Sayed’s association with Piker makes him vulnerable to valid anti-American critiques. Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance speculated about El-Sayed potentially running for president, a scenario he described as undesirable.
Republican efforts to portray El-Sayed as too radical for Michigan voters include a digital ad campaign by the Senate Leadership Fund labeling him “dangerously radical.” The state remains a key target for Democrats seeking to retain control of the Senate.
Before the primary, Rogers expressed confidence in defeating El-Sayed if he became the nominee, as reported by CNN. His campaign is now focusing on winning over Black and Jewish voters who supported El-Sayed’s primary opponent, Haley Stevens.
A GOP operative described El-Sayed’s primary win as ideal for Republicans, predicting difficulty in uniting Michigan’s voters after such a divisive primary.
