The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) is excited to announce the launch of a new four-day summer program in Venice, Italy. The Biennale Certificate in Philosophy and Art: Seeds of the Future is a unique opportunity for creatives from diverse backgrounds to engage with the Venice Biennale in a meaningful and philosophical way.

Designed by IDSVA and philosopher Giovanbattista Tusa, this advanced certificate program is tailored for curators, artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners looking to explore the living context of the Venice Biennale. The program is structured around four key philosophical orientations: Rooting, Growing, Branching, and Cultivating Futures. Through a combination of theoretical reflection, embodied experience, and collaborative experimentation, participants will delve into the role of art as a mode of world-disclosure and situated intervention.

The program kicks off with a philosophical exploration of the Biennale as a field of situated propositions, intertwined with histories of exclusion and epistemic forces. Participants will then delve into knowledge and interpretation with a guest curator, exploring the Biennale as an epistemic landscape where different truths coexist and collide.

On the third day, participants will have the opportunity for self-study as they independently visit the Biennale pavilions. This day focuses on the temporal construction of the pavilion and encourages participants to look for moments where artworks gesture towards the unseen and the possible.

The final day of the program centers on futurity as a philosophical condition, with a guided visit to a Venice pavilion led by an artist or theorist. This day serves as a laboratory for exploring how art intervenes in the present while being connected to unknown futures.

Participants who complete the full 25-hour program, including guided sessions and self-study, and submit a 1,000-word reflective statement will receive an Advanced Certificate in Philosophy and Art. The program fee is $1800, which includes tuition instruction, a Biennale pass, and the certificate award. Participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and stay in Venice.

To apply for the program, interested individuals are asked to submit a short statement outlining their practice and interest in the seminar, a brief biography, and CV or resume by March 15, 2026, to biennalecertificate@idsva.edu. Optional links or examples of recent work can also be included in the application.
