The Department of Defense has recently awarded its first generative AI defense contract to Jericho Security, a New York-based startup specializing in cybersecurity. This $1.8 million Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase II contract, announced through AFWERX, signifies a strategic shift in military cybersecurity. Jericho Security is tasked with developing advanced cybersecurity solutions for the Department of the Air Force.

Sage Wohns, CEO of Jericho Security, emphasized the significance of this contract, stating that it marks a major milestone in how the military is addressing AI-based threats. The company’s approach focuses on simulating complex, multi-channel phishing attacks that mimic real-world scenarios. Wohns explained that phishing campaigns today involve coordinated attempts across various platforms such as emails, text messages, phone calls, and video calls to deceive targets.

Jericho Security’s technology stands out for its emphasis on human vulnerability, which is often considered the weakest link in cybersecurity. The company claims that up to 95% of data breaches result from human error. Their platform creates personalized security training programs based on individual risk profiles, using generative AI to simulate sophisticated attacks like deepfake impersonations and AI-generated malware.

The timing of this contract is crucial as military personnel face increasingly targeted attacks. Wohns mentioned a spear-phishing attack on Air Force drone pilots using fake user manuals as an example. Jericho Security’s expertise in evaluating vulnerabilities through attack simulation and specialized training has proven invaluable in such scenarios.

Securing a Defense Department contract is a significant validation for Jericho Security, positioning them to expand into the government sector. The company is well-prepared to meet stringent security requirements, maintaining military-grade cybersecurity standards like end-to-end encryption and isolated secure environments for handling sensitive military data.

Jericho Security’s approach to cybersecurity differs from traditional methods by employing a “predator and prey” model. This model involves continuous attack simulation to gather real-time data and enhance both offensive and defensive capabilities. By evolving alongside emerging threats, their AI systems can proactively address potential risks.

The Air Force contract, facilitated through AFWERX, is part of a broader initiative to accelerate military adoption of private sector technology. AFWERX has awarded over 6,200 contracts worth more than $4.7 billion since 2019, aiming to strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base and expedite technology deployment. Jericho Security’s innovative solutions are poised to play a crucial role in enhancing military cybersecurity and safeguarding against evolving threats.
