A man arrested for assaulting Thornton officers during traffic stop

Last week, a man was arrested on suspicion of assault after dragging two Thornton officers with his car while trying to flee a traffic stop, according to police reports.

During the incident, one of the officers was bitten and run over by the suspect, as stated in a news release from the Thornton Police Department.

The officers had noticed a suspicious vehicle without license plates parked at a gas station near West 88th Avenue and Huron Street around 2 a.m. on Feb. 3. The driver, identified as 27-year-old Wesley Norton, provided false identification to the officers and refused to comply with their instructions, driving off and dragging the officers along.

One officer sustained minor injuries, while the other, who was bitten and hit by the suspect, suffered more severe injuries, according to the police.

After two days, Norton was identified as the driver and taken into custody. He has been charged in Adams County District Court with second-degree assault on a peace officer, two counts of third-degree assault on a first-responder, obstructing a peace officer, false reporting of identifying information to law enforcement, and reckless driving.

Norton is currently held on a $20,000 cash or surety bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 10, as per court records.
