Exploring the Soft and Cozy Aesthetic of Maria McManus’s Latest Collection
While the fashion world has been abuzz with sharp geometric shapes this season, Maria McManus took a different approach, drawing inspiration from the rolling and misty landscape of her native Ireland. Describing the atmospheric phenomenon known as a “soft day,” McManus translated the gentle colors and textures of her surroundings into a beautifully understated collection.
Surprisingly, McManus found inspiration in the works of poet and former Irish president Michael D. Higgins, a fervent advocate for the preservation of Irish culture. Drawing on Higgins’s passion for literature and the arts, McManus sought to create her own tribute to Irish heritage through her designs. The collection featured traditional Aran knits and flowing silhouettes, all reimagined within the vibrant tapestry of New York City.
Embracing her commitment to sustainable fashion, McManus incorporated eco-friendly practices into her designs. A striking python-printed leather skirt was crafted from repurposed deadstock leather sourced from local factories, while a delicate hand-crocheted bandana was handmade by an artist from the Lower East Side. Additionally, a cozy fisherman sweater combined Irish craftsmanship with recycled Italian cashmere and cotton, showcasing McManus’s dedication to ethical production.
Throughout the collection, McManus infused a sense of warmth and elegance, appealing to women seeking a polished yet cozy aesthetic. Romantic touches were evident in every piece, from a classic Aran knit adorned with pearly buttons to a luxurious black velvet dress trimmed with vintage pearl accents. In a fashion landscape dominated by bold statements, McManus’s designs offer a refreshing embrace of softness and sophistication.
