Emily Adams Bode Aujla introduces her carefully crafted collections with a steady and relatable approach, likened to a story unfolding in two chapters. Known for their rich material development, her collections result from extensive research. For instance, she and her team dedicated an entire year to mastering work with a specific boucle yarn, delving into resources such as boys’ scouting guides, Frontier Times back issues, and the National Cowboy and Western Archive.

As spring arrives, Bode Aujla wraps up the previous season’s Rodeo Bodeo theme, inspired by memories of her childhood pony, Checkers, a retired Barrel Racer. “There’s the juxtaposition of the personal narrative and the historical aspect,” she explained. The designer was particularly drawn to imagery and stories from the 1920s to the 1940s, with inspirations like children’s costumes from the 1940s and 1950s reappearing in the spring collection.

While the depth of storytelling in each Bode garment is impressive enough for essays, the clothing must also resonate emotionally with shoppers, prompting them to make purchases. The collections rely on carefully designed details and craftsmanship to evoke positive reactions. Similar to the fall collection, the spring line offers a Westernwear influence with a broader “country” vibe, highlighted by cornflower blue ginghams. Suede or denim chore jackets adorned with rivets are available for men, alongside a brown-and-white cow-print pony skin used throughout the collection.

Bode Aujla has retained the smoking looks from fall, now enhanced with trendy cummerbunds or prize ribbons. Men’s pants are slightly cropped and styled without socks for a youthful, casual look. For women, the collection features spangled tulle pieces inspired by rodeo costumes. Standout items include fringed leather pants with patch pockets, a paisley jacket modeled after a Victorian capelet, and a suede skirt with charming cow and rope embroidery.

The relaxed vibe of summer is encapsulated in easygoing shorts and soft tops with button details reminiscent of Edwardian children’s undergarments. A point of critique is the youthful appearance of Bode’s models, who resemble young teenagers, while the brand’s actual wearers tend to be more mature. This choice in casting reflects Bode Aujla’s vision of an “American Pilgrimage West and the open range,” symbolizing new beginnings and possibilities. However, aligning the brand’s imagery more closely with its primary customer base could enhance the Bode universe.
