A powerful winter storm hit California on Monday, bringing treacherous thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow in mountain areas.

Millions of Los Angeles County residents faced flash flood warnings as rain pounded the region. People in areas affected by last year’s devastating wildfires were under evacuation warnings due to the risk of mud and debris flows.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass instructed emergency crews and city departments to be prepared for any issues.

The storm caused chaos on roadways from Sonoma County to the Sierra Nevada. Traffic was halted on I-80 near the Nevada state line, and a large tree fell onto US-101 in Santa Barbara County.

Forecasters predicted up to 8 feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada, northern Shasta County, and parts of the Coast Range. Travel conditions were expected to be dangerous due to heavy snow, wind, and low visibility.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office warned residents to stay alert for the storm, despite the spring-like weather experienced earlier in 2026.

California’s Office of Emergency Services deployed fire and rescue personnel to areas at risk of flooding and mudslides.

In Southern California, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knotts Berry Farm closed due to the storm. Local ski resorts, however, welcomed the winter weather.

Meanwhile, other states faced different weather threats. Parts of eastern Colorado were warned of fire danger, while Texas, New Mexico, and Kansas were under red flag warnings.

The storm occurred during a snow drought in the American West, with below-average snow cover and depth. California received heavy rains in December, helping alleviate drought conditions.

More stormy weather was forecast for California, with a coastal flood advisory in San Francisco and snow expected in nearby mountains.

Despite the challenges, residents like Realtor Kashawna McInerny in Wrightwood remained calm and prepared for the storm’s impact.

Associated Press writers Amy Taxin and Dorany Pineda contributed to this report.
