Google Lowers RAM Requirement for Android TV, But Is It a Smart Move?

When it comes to TV streaming devices, performance is key. The ability to smoothly play 4K video is crucial, especially with the increasing size and complexity of streaming apps. Google recently made a surprising move by reducing the RAM requirement for Android TV from 1.5GB to just 1GB of memory.

According to Android Authority, recent commitments to the Android Open Source Project have allowed virtualized builds for Android TV to run on as little as 1GB of RAM. However, if users want the full Google TV experience, which includes additional features and a separate UI, they will need at least 2GB of RAM. For comparison, the latest Google TV streamer has 4GB of RAM, while the older Nvidia Shield TV has 2GB and the upgraded SHIELD TV Pro has 3GB.

It seems that this move may be aimed at encouraging more manufacturers to release Android TV and Google TV products by lowering hardware requirements. For example, Walmart offers an Onn streamer with Android TV for $20, with a 4K upgrade version priced at $50. Even these budget-friendly devices come with 2GB and 3GB of RAM, respectively. Running modern Android apps smoothly on just 1GB of RAM may prove challenging, especially for streaming video.

Another consideration is the impact on smart TVs, which often come preloaded with a specific smart TV platform like Roku, Amazon Fire, or Android TV. By reducing the hardware requirements for Android TV, Google may be looking to expand the platform to cheaper television models, potentially increasing access to the Google Play Store and its range of apps.

However, for users who rely on smart TV features and expect a certain level of performance, the lower RAM requirement may result in a subpar experience. As streaming apps continue to grow in size and complexity, it’s questionable whether lowering the RAM requirement is a wise decision.

Overall, this move by Google has raised concerns about the performance and user experience of Android TV devices, especially in the face of increasingly demanding streaming apps. As technology advances, it’s important for companies to maintain high standards and prioritize user satisfaction. Only time will tell if Google’s decision to lower the RAM requirement for Android TV proves to be a smart move or a misstep.
