Emergency services responded to a chemical incident at an industrial site in Levin, resulting in 22 patients being treated. The incident occurred at Alliance Group’s meat processing plant on Hamaria Rd, prompting a swift response from St John ambulance, police, and fire crews. Firefighters established decontamination measures to address a reported gas leak at the facility. Initially, 19 individuals were reported to be receiving treatment.
The scale of the response included five ambulances, three rapid response units, two operations managers, and a St John Major Incident Support Team. Additional support was provided by a fire crew from Otaki and a specialist unit from Palmerston North. Alliance Group confirmed that processing operations at the plant were halted due to a gas reaction caused by the chemical incident.
Despite the severity of the situation, no patients were transported to the hospital and no further ambulances were required. While the extent of injuries remains unknown, authorities have cordoned off the area to ensure public safety.
